What is the Google Nest Programmable Smart Wi-Fi Thermostat?

The Google Nest Programmable Smart Wi-Fi Thermostat is a low-cost Wi-Fi thermostat that you schedule in the Google Home app and that turns itself down when nobody is home. In Dubai it costs 380 AED, 430 AED less than the Nest Learning Thermostat 4th Gen.

It is the sensible pick when you want a real smart thermostat without paying for the learning engine. You tell it when you are in and when you are out. It does the rest, and the app suggests tweaks.

One honest caveat up front. This is a programmable thermostat, not a learning one. If you want a thermostat that works out your routine by itself, look at the Learning Thermostat 4th Gen instead.

Key features

Quick Schedule

The Google Home app walks you through building a heating and cooling schedule, and you can change it whenever you like. Five minutes on the sofa and you are done.

Savings Finder

The app looks for more ways to save and suggests tweaks to your schedule. You accept or ignore them with a tap.

Control from anywhere

See and change the temperature from your phone using the Google Home app, wherever you are with internet access.

Touch bar

On the wall, you adjust the temperature by swiping the touch bar on the right of the unit.

System alerts

Google says it can alert you if something looks wrong with your heating or cooling system and remind you about maintenance such as filters.

The cooling-only catch every Dubai buyer should know

Google states this thermostat is designed to work without a C wire in most homes. Then it adds a condition that matters here: in some cases, particularly with heating-only or cooling-only systems or a zone controller, a C wire or another power accessory may be necessary.

Cooling-only is exactly what most UAE homes have. So do not assume. Send us a photo of your wiring and we will tell you whether you need the Nest Power Connector, the C-wire substitute Google sells, before you order.

Installer’s note

A power-starved thermostat shows up as a screen that dims, a device that drops off Wi-Fi, or an AC that clicks on and off. It is a five-minute fix when you know about it beforehand and a headache when you do not.

If your week looks the same every Monday to Friday, programmable is plenty. If your routine changes, learning earns its extra 430 AED. See also our 3rd Gen at 730 AED.

Will it work in your Dubai home?

It needs a 24V system. Ductless split ACs run by a remote have no thermostat wire, and fan coil units on 230V line voltage are not a match for a 24V thermostat. Never connect a 24V thermostat to a 230V line. Our installation guide shows how to check in five minutes.

Setting up Quick Schedule for a Dubai household

Start simple. Build a weekday schedule around when people leave and return, and a weekend schedule that is more relaxed. Set a comfortable temperature for when you are home and a higher away temperature for when you are out. Around 27–28°C is a common rule of thumb for an empty home in summer, so tune it to yours.

Then use it for two weeks and adjust. If the house is warm when you arrive, move the cool-down earlier. If you hear the AC running while everyone is out, move the away time sooner. The app makes these changes a tap each.

Using it through a UAE summer

With a programmable thermostat, the schedule does the work, so make it honest. Do not set 16°C to cool faster. An AC does not cool quicker because you asked for a lower number. And if your routine shifts, update the schedule, because the thermostat will not notice on its own. Read our guide to cutting AC bills for more habits.

What you give up compared with a learning model

  • No automatic learning. You build and maintain the schedule yourself.
  • A simpler experience. It does not have the larger display and Motion Sense of the 4th Gen Learning Thermostat.
  • Check room-sensor support. Ask us before you plan around one.

What you keep is the part that saves money: scheduling, away turn-down and remote control, for 430 AED less than the Learning Thermostat 4th Gen.

Where to mount it

Choose an interior wall, away from direct sun, kitchen heat and the AC outlet. Where it sits decides what it senses, and what it senses decides when your AC runs.

Installation and setup

Google designs this thermostat for easy installs on standard systems. Even so, we recommend a wiring photo first, because of the cooling-only power question above. We then fit the thermostat, test cooling and fan control, and connect it to Wi-Fi and the Google Home app. Read the full installation guide for what to expect.

Who should buy it

  • You want smart control and scheduling on a tight budget.
  • Your routine is predictable from week to week.
  • You are happy to set a schedule once and adjust it occasionally.

Look at the Learning Thermostat instead if your days change a lot, or if you want a larger display and Motion Sense.

It costs 380 AED in Dubai. Ask us on WhatsApp for current stock, delivery and an installation quote.

What is the difference between this and the Nest Learning Thermostat?

You build the schedule yourself in the Google Home app with Quick Schedule. The Nest Learning Thermostat learns your routine automatically and costs 810 AED in the 4th Gen.

What is Savings Finder?

It is designed to work without one in most homes. Google says heating-only, cooling-only and zone-controlled systems may need a C wire or another power accessory, so we check your wiring first.

Will it work with my AC in Dubai?

It works with 24V systems. It usually does not suit ductless split ACs run by a remote, or fan coil units that run on 230V line voltage. Send a photo of your current thermostat and its wiring on WhatsApp and we will check before you buy.

Can I control it from my phone?

Yes. Use the Google Home app on iOS or Android to see and change the temperature from anywhere with internet access.
