What is the Nest 3rd Generation Learning Thermostat?

The Nest 3rd Generation Learning Thermostat is a Wi-Fi smart thermostat with a 2.08 inch display that learns your heating and cooling habits and builds a schedule from them. In Dubai it costs 730 AED, which is 80 AED less than the 4th Gen at 810 AED.

It is the model that made the category. Turn the ring, pick a temperature, and keep doing it for a week. It remembers. Google lists it as ENERGY STAR certified, and the display is readable from across the room thanks to Farsight, so you can check the temperature without walking up to the wall.

Newer is not always better for your wall, your wiring or your budget. This model still does the one job that matters, and it does it for less.

Key features

Learns and builds a schedule

It watches your changes and turns them into a program. You correct it when it gets something wrong, and it adjusts. That is the whole interface.

Farsight display

The 24-bit colour LCD is 2.08 inches across at 480 × 480 pixels. When you walk into the room, the sensors wake it and it shows the temperature large enough to read from a distance.

Voice and app control

Control it from the Google Home app or the Nest app. Google’s spec sheet says it works with Hey Google and Alexa.

Works with a room sensor

Google lists compatibility with the Nest Temperature Sensor, which helps in villas where the hallway and the bedroom tell different stories.

If the bigger display, Motion Sense and Matter matter to you, the 4th Gen is worth the extra. If you want a proven learning thermostat for less, this one is a fair choice. Read our full 3rd Gen vs 4th Gen comparison.

Will it work in your Dubai home?

This is where the 3rd Gen needs the most care. Google states it is only compatible with low-voltage 24V systems, not line voltage or millivolt. That rules out the fan coil units that run on 230V, and most ductless split ACs have no thermostat wire at all.

Wiring matters too. Retail listings note that some systems without a common wire are not compatible, and Google sells the Nest Power Connector as a C-wire substitute that attaches at the furnace, air handler or zone controller. Send us a photo of your wiring and we will tell you which camp you are in. Our installation guide has the full checklist.

Who should buy it

  • You want a learning thermostat and have a 24V system.
  • You prefer a smaller, classic dial design.
  • You already use Alexa or Hey Google.

Look at the 4th Gen instead if you want Matter, the larger display or the easiest power requirements.

Living with it: the first week

Do not set it and forget it on day one. Use the ring the way you normally would. Turn it down when you go to bed, up when you wake, and let it watch. By the end of the week it starts proposing a schedule. Correct it where it guesses wrong. Within a couple of weeks most households stop touching it.

Two things speed the learning. Be consistent, because random changes teach it nothing. And do not set extreme numbers, because it will learn those too.

Using it through a UAE summer

A learning thermostat suits a house that empties out during the day. It notices the empty hours and eases off, then brings the temperature back before you return. Use a sensible away setting, not a switched-off AC, because a house that has soaked up 45°C of heat takes a long time to recover. And skip the 16°C habit. An AC does not cool faster because you asked for a lower number.

If bedrooms sit far from the hallway, the 3rd Gen works with the Nest Temperature Sensor, or you can step up to the 4th Gen sensor bundle.

Is the 3rd Gen still worth buying?

Honest answer: yes for the right buyer, no for the wrong one. It is an older design, and it is a learning thermostat that has been doing its job for years. It is a good deal when your system is a straightforward 24V setup and you want learning without paying for the newest hardware.

It is the wrong buy if your wiring has no common wire and you want the easiest install, or if you want Matter support. In both cases, the 4th Gen fits better. Not sure? Send us a photo.

Where to mount it

Use an interior wall at about eye level. Keep it out of direct sun and away from kitchen heat, doors to the balcony and the AC outlet. The thermostat controls the house based on what it feels at that spot, so a bad location means a badly cooled home.

Installation and setup

We confirm compatibility from your wiring photo, switch the power off at the breaker, label every wire, fit the base and display, then test cooling and fan control. After that we connect the thermostat to your Wi-Fi and add it to the Google Home app or the Nest app. Straightforward 24V swaps are usually quick, and we confirm timing once we have seen your wiring.
