What is the Google Nest Learning Thermostat 4th Gen?
The Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) is a Wi-Fi smart thermostat that learns your schedule, adjusts cooling and heating on its own, and can be controlled from your phone, Google Home or any Matter-enabled app. In Dubai it costs 810 AED in Polished Obsidian, Silver and Gold.
It swaps the plastic box on your wall for a 2.7 inch round display that reads more like a small instrument than a gadget. Turn the ring, tap, or just walk up. A radar sensor notices you coming and wakes the screen before your hand gets there. Underneath, the learning engine watches what you do during the first week or so and starts writing your schedule for you.
Here is the part that matters in the UAE. From June to September a thermostat here is not nudging a heating system, it is fighting 45°C afternoons. A unit that pre-cools the house before you arrive beats one that blasts the AC the moment you open the door. That is the job this thermostat does well.
Three finishes, one piece of hardware. The Polished Obsidian, Polished Silver and Polished Gold models are the same thermostat in different metal-look trims, and each is 810 AED at our Dubai store.
Key features that change daily use
It learns your routine
For the first week, treat it like a new flatmate. Change the temperature when you normally would and let it watch. It picks up the pattern, cooler at 6 pm when you are home, warmer when the house is empty, and begins filling in the schedule. Correct it a few times and it listens. That is all the programming there is.
Motion Sense display
A Soli radar sensor inside the unit detects someone approaching and lights the 600 × 600 pixel display. It is a small thing until you walk past in the dark and the temperature is already glowing on the wall.
Control from anywhere
Over dual-band Wi-Fi (802.11n, 2.4 and 5 GHz) you can change the temperature from the Google Home app. Landing at DXB at 4 pm in July? Switch the house to cool before you reach the taxi rank.
Google Home and Matter
Google lists the thermostat as working with Google Home and Matter. In practice, that means a Matter-enabled app or voice assistant can see and control it, not only Google’s own. It is less lock-in than older Nest models gave you.
Energy history and certification
The 4th gen is ENERGY STAR certified according to Google’s spec sheet, and the app keeps a history of how long your system ran. That history is how you spot the afternoon your AC ran flat out because a window was left open.
Add a Nest Temperature Sensor
Hallway thermostats lie. The reading at the front door can sit a couple of degrees away from the bedroom upstairs, especially in double-storey villas where heat stacks at the top. Pair the thermostat with a Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen) and it can work from the room you actually sleep in. We sell the pair as a bundle at 1,050 AED, which puts the sensor at 240 AED over the thermostat alone.
Polished Obsidian, Silver or Gold: which finish should you pick?
There is no performance difference. You are choosing how it looks on your wall for the next ten years, so it is worth a minute.
| Finish | Looks best with | Watch out for | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Polished Obsidian | White, light grey or cream walls; black switch plates and dark trim | Polished surfaces show fingerprints. A microfibre cloth fixes it. | 810 AED |
| Polished Silver | Grey, greige and white interiors; stainless or chrome fittings | Almost nothing. It is the most forgiving choice. | 810 AED |
| Polished Gold | Warm beige, sand and wood tones; brass or champagne hardware | On a stark white wall it can look loud. Ask us for a photo first. | 810 AED |
If you cannot decide, go Silver. It disappears into most Dubai interiors, and nobody has ever asked an installer to swap it back.

Order on WhatsAppWill it work in your Dubai home? Check this before you order
Most buyers skip this step. Don’t.
The thermostat speaks 24V. Plenty of Dubai homes do not. Walk into a typical apartment and you will often find a ductless split unit driven by an infrared remote, with no thermostat wire anywhere. Other buildings run fan coil units on chilled water, and some of those thermostats operate at 230V, which is a different animal entirely. A 24V thermostat must never be wired to a 230V line.
Five checks, five minutes:
- Read the label on your current thermostat. Look for 24V, or for 220-240V. If it says 230V, stop here and message us.
- Switch the AC off at the breaker. Always, before any faceplate comes off.
- Photograph the wiring. Take it before you touch a single wire, with the terminal labels visible.
- Run Google’s checker. Use the Nest compatibility checker and enter the wire labels.
- Send us the photo on WhatsApp. We confirm fit, and tell you honestly if it won’t.
People panic about the common wire. Google says the 4th gen is designed to work with or without one, and that a C wire or Nest Power Connector is needed in under 1% of cases. The classic symptom of a power-starved install is a thermostat that reboots or an AC that clicks on and off. If we see that risk in your photo, we tell you before you pay.
If your AC does not use a 24V thermostat at all, a Nest is not the answer by itself. Take a look at our Dropair adapter page or ask us what suits your unit.
How much energy can it really save in the UAE?
Google-cited US field studies reported average savings of about 10–12% on heating and 15% on cooling. Good numbers. They also come from American houses with ducted systems and real winters.
Dubai flips the math. Almost your whole bill is cooling, so the 15% figure matters more and the heating figure barely matters at all. But two things cut against you. A household that is home all day, with family, helpers or someone working from the spare room, leaves less empty time for the thermostat to harvest. And no thermostat fixes a leaky villa. If your doors gap and your glazing is single pane, deal with that first.
Do the sum with your own bill. As an example only: on a 1,500 AED summer cooling bill, a 10% cut is 150 AED a month. Over four peak months that is 600 AED, and the thermostat starts to pay for itself inside its first year. Your bill, your result.
Setting it up for a UAE summer: four habits that matter
- Do not set 16°C to cool faster. An AC does not cool quicker because you asked for a lower number. It just runs longer and overshoots.
- Hold an away temperature of around 27–28°C instead of switching off. The house stays recoverable, and the compressor does not have to fight a 40-degree-soaked interior. Treat this as a rule of thumb and tune it to your home.
- Mount it on an interior wall. Not an exterior one, not in direct sun, not next to a kitchen door. The sensor reads where it lives.
- Use a temperature sensor in the bedroom. That is where most people actually feel comfort.
Installation and setup: what to expect
You can install it yourself if you are comfortable with low-voltage wiring and your system is a straightforward 24V swap. Most customers in Dubai ask us to do it, because one mislabelled wire is an expensive afternoon. Here is the path from order to a working thermostat.
- Confirm compatibility by sending us your photo on WhatsApp.
- Choose your finish and confirm stock and delivery.
- Book the installation visit at a time that suits you.
- We isolate the power and remove the old unit, labelling every wire as we go.
- We mount the base and connect the wires, then attach the display.
- We join your Wi-Fi and link Google Home, so it appears on your phone.
- Use it normally for a week. The learning starts on its own.

Compare it with the other Nest models we sell
| Model | Price | What you get | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nest Learning Thermostat 4th Gen (this page) | 810 AED | Learning schedule, 2.7 inch display, Motion Sense, Matter, three polished finishes | Most homes: the balanced pick |
| 4th Gen with Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen) | 1,050 AED | The same Learning Thermostat paired with a room sensor | Villas and bedrooms far from the hallway |
| Nest 3rd Generation Learning Thermostat | 730 AED | Earlier learning model that predates Matter | Buyers who want the learning feature for less |
| Google Nest 4th Generation Programmable Smart Wi-Fi Thermostat | 380 AED | Lower-cost Wi-Fi thermostat; check its page for exact features | Tight budgets and simple schedules |
The 80 AED gap between this model and the 3rd generation buys you the newer display, Motion Sense and Matter support. If those do not matter to you, the 3rd gen remains a fair choice.
Who should buy it, and who should skip it
A good fit if
- Your system is 24V and you want a thermostat that manages itself.
- The house sits empty for several hours a day.
- You already use Google Home or other Matter-enabled apps.
- You care how the thing looks on the wall.
Think twice if
- You have a ductless split AC with a remote. Without a 24V thermostat connection this is the wrong tool.
- Your fan coil unit runs at 230V.
- Someone is home all day and prefers one fixed setting. A cheaper programmable model fits better.

Google Nest Thermostat Dubai: frequently asked questions
How much does the Google Nest Learning Thermostat 4th Gen cost in Dubai?
It costs 810 AED in Dubai, and the price is the same for Polished Obsidian, Polished Silver and Polished Gold. That figure is for the thermostat itself. Message us on WhatsApp for an installation quote and for the bundle with a Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen), which is 1,050 AED.
What is the difference between Polished Obsidian, Silver and Gold?
Only the finish. All three use the same hardware, display and software. Polished Obsidian is a dark metal-look finish, Polished Silver is neutral, and Polished Gold is warm. Pick the one that suits your wall colour and trim.
Will the Nest Learning Thermostat work with my AC in Dubai?
According to Google it works with most 24V systems, including gas, electric, oil, forced air, heat pump and radiant. It usually does not suit ductless split ACs run by a remote, or fan coil units that run on 230V. Send a photo of your current thermostat and its wiring on WhatsApp and we will check before you buy.
Do I need a C wire to install it?
The thermostat is designed to work with or without a C wire. Google says that in limited cases, under 1%, a C wire or Nest Power Connector may be needed so the system can power the thermostat in all conditions. We check this during the pre-order compatibility review.
Can I control it from my phone when I am away from home?
Yes. Connect it to your home Wi-Fi (802.11n, 2.4 or 5 GHz) and control it from the Google Home app on your phone from anywhere with internet access.
Does it work with Google Home, Matter and voice assistants?
Google lists it as working with Google Home and Matter, so Matter-enabled apps and voice assistants can control it. If you rely on a specific assistant, such as Alexa, ask us on WhatsApp before ordering so we can confirm your setup.
How much energy can a Nest Learning Thermostat save in the UAE?
Google-cited US studies reported average savings of about 10-12% on heating and 15% on cooling. Dubai homes are cooling-dominated and every home differs, so treat those figures as a benchmark rather than a promise. Houses that sit empty for long stretches usually gain the most.
Do you install it, and what about delivery and warranty?
Yes. Our team installs the thermostat and connects it to your Wi-Fi and Google Home. Most straightforward 24V swaps are quick, but we confirm timing after seeing your wiring. Message us on WhatsApp for current delivery and warranty terms.
